PASADENA, Texas – One man was killed and three other workers were injured as a result of an explosion at a hydrogen peroxide plant Saturday afternoon.

The explosion occurred between 12:30 and 12:45 pm at PeroxyChem located at 12000 Bay Area Boulevard in Pasadena, Texas.

According to KHOU News, a contractor was transferring a liquid mix of chemicals during a routine function at the plant when the contractor’s equipment exploded, resulting in a blast strong enough to kill one contractor and break another contractor’s arm. As a precaution, two PeroxyChem workers were taken to the hospital due to chemical exposure. The fatally injured contractor’s name has not yet been released.

Authorities say there was never a danger to the public from the event, but there was a release of an oil-based cleaning solution as a result of the incident.

Plant officials said in a news release, “We are deeply saddened to report the loss of the contractor. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

OSHA was notified of the incident and is investigating the matter, but it is still too early to determine the root cause of the explosion. The plant has since resumed operation.
